Description:  U33C 8614, SD45T-2 9376 and SD45 8808 accelerate an eastbound extra past Mallard Junction, on its way out of Lake Charles yard. The switch was the beginning of the Lake Arthur Branch, and is still the connection with the Lake Charles Harbor & Terminal District's railroad. Notice the block of Pacific Fruit Express reefers right behind the locomotives.

Description:  Facing north at the west end of the Espee's Lake Charles Yard. The little engine terminal was once inside a wye that was the beginning of the branch line to Deridder. That line ran down the median of North Goos Boulevard -- in the upper center of the image -- for about twelve blocks. MP15AC 2709 and SW1500 2472 are coupled togther, while SW1500 2669 is by itself on the next track.

Description:  The Espee depot at Lake Charles was typical of the brick stations that were used at many Parish seats along the SUNSET ROUTE in Louisiana. It was destroyed by a fire on 23 January 1984.

Description:  The Southern Pacific's SUNSET ROUTE bridge across the Calcasieu River, at the north end of Lake Charles (the lake) and on the west side of Lake Charles (the city). The high-level bridge is Interstate 10/U.S. Highway 90. The KCS had a bridge right off to the right, and the SP had a second bridge across the Calcasieu River a little further upstream, for its branch to Deridder.

Description:  In this view looking west shows the I-10 and SP crossings at the north end of Lake Charles. The Calcasieu River flows into the lake right under the highway bridge. The former KCS right-of-way into Lake Charles is visible through the trees on the right. In the background are some of the petrochemical plants in Westlake. These produce large amounts of traffic for both the SP and KCS.
