Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8661, #8657, #8667, #9690, and #9776. #8661, #8657, and # 8667 are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8661 and #8667 were built in 1958, but # 8657 was built in 1957. #9690 is an EH-15 built by EMD in 1949 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #9776 is an EF-15A built by EMD in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. They are pulling a 59-car westbound freight train with caboose #477806. They have just passed under the 12th Street Bridge and are right in front of the Altoona Passenger Station.

Description:  24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 November 1964. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8678, #8674, and #8667. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pushing a 76-car mixed-cargo freight train (headed by engine #9657) up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and head back down the Alleghenies to East Altoona for yet another run up the Mountains. Photo taken from the steps of SLOPE Tower, partially visible on the right.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8614 and #8667. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8614 is an AS-24M built in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. #8667 is an AS-18AM built in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They are pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight. Also note the day-glow orange N-5C caboose #477825, as well as the Santa Fe Railroad refrigerator car.
